Bone marrow transplantation is the ultimate treatment for several blood disorders and oncological conditions. For HSPCs isolated from the umbilical cord blood there is the need to expand those cells in vitro to reach sufficient cell numbers for the repopulation of an adult hematopoietic system. My Master thesis research consists in culturing mesenchymal stromal cells to produce extracellular matrix (ECM), establish an optimal protocol for the decellularization of the produced ECM and use it as a feeder layer for the proliferation of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells.
